Web Cam that holds its zoom

Has anyone worked with an affordable webcam that holds its zoom (in tandem with oF)? I am installing a face-capture piece in a museum and they need a simple daily implementation of the installation (ie: they can’t be fussing with the zoom everytime they start up). The camera needs to be zoom-able as its position is fixed and far away. I am looking to spend under $50. Suggestions?

Most UVC cameras (that includes most webcams) can be pretty easily controlled programmatically on Windows, i.e. you set the zoom in code when the app starts up. If you’re willing to check out some windows code, this is the place to start: http://www.quickcamteam.net/documentation/how-to/how-to-control-pan-tilt-zoom-on-logitech-cameras

On OSX it’s a little trickier, but there is some code and people who’ve worked w/it in OF check this discussion: http://forum.openframeworks.cc/t/uvc-camera-control-in-mac-os-x/3917/0

If you can spend a little more than $50, look at the PS3 Eye, there’s a lot of support for controlling that on all platforms.

The ps3eye is a great cheap camera and it does have a 2 position zoom, but it’s still a wide angle. I had a similar conundrum so I created custom enclosures for the ps3eye that have are cs-mount lens compatible:

It was quite a pain in the ass to do the first time around, but maybe you can improve on my design or learn from it at least.
