Job Description: Initiates the design, development, execution and implementation of scientific research projects to fuel Intel’s growth in the areas of computing, communication, technology and manufacturing and new business opportunity. Investigates the feasibility of applying scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions and products typically 7+ years prior to landing on a product roadmap. Plans and executes laboratory research. Maintains substantial knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories, and contributes to scientific literature and conferences. May participate in development of intellectual property. May coordinate interdepartmental activities and research efforts.

The successful candidate will be part of one of several ambitious research initiatives underway at Intel and will contribute from early research phases through to prototype and production. The candidate is expected to be a highly self-motivated individual with effective communication skills and ability to work in a dynamic work environment with colleagues with diverse backgrounds. The candidate must show passion not just for conducting research but also for turning ideas into reality and impacting Intel and its customers.

The candidate will creatively identify, prototype, iterate and evaluate compelling new usages and applications that rely upon new technical capabilities being developed within Intel. The successful candidate must have sufficiently flexible and diverse interests to work across this space of technologies. This is a “hands on” position where the candidate must have a mix of skills to propose novel experiences, implement them, iterate to refine designs and evaluate experiences.

The candidate must have interest in developing compelling, new usages and applications with such research technologies for users varying from consumers to Makers to professionals.

Qualifications
Intel Labs is seeking a motivated researcher to join our Systems and Software Research (SSR) Lab. We are currently accepting applications for a novel media experiences researcher.
This is a full-time position. Compensation is competitive and will be commensurate with experience. Candidates must be willing to relocate to the Santa Clara, California area for this position.
You must possess the below minimum qualifications to be initially considered for this position. Preferred qualifications are in addition to the minimum requirements and are considered a plus factor in identifying top candidates. Experience listed below would be obtained through a combination of your school work/classes/research and/or relevant previous job and/or internship experiences.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • M.S. or M.A. in technical, design or artistic field
  • Proven track record in proposing, developing, prototyping, iterating and evaluating novel media experiences based on research systems and capabilities not available “off the shelf”.
  • Demonstrated mix of skills in creative idea generation and design, software development, hardware prototyping, and evaluation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and fluency with tools and languages for designing and building novel usages and experiences, such as: Adobe Creative Suite, Processing, Unity 3D, and Unreal Engine.
  • Ability to conduct user studies and user experience evaluation.
  • Willingness to work across diverse research technologies, including computational imaging systems, computational display systems, immersive displays, wearable computers, and head-worn displays.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in technical field
  • Portfolio of experiences using novel media platforms such as head-worn displays, 3D displays, immersive displays, Augmented Reality, multimodal displays, or other advanced media formats.
  • Artistic or design background
  • Willingness to take calculated risks and stretch to achieve ambitious goals
  • Strong analytical and logical problem-solving skills paired with wild creativity
  • Excellent written/verbal communication and presentation skills
