I have posted this before but with no luck, I hope that someone can help me, I have had a great experience of being part of this community which is why I want to write about it, unfortunately I cant include just my own opinions… please if anyone has the time for a brief reply I’d be very greatful…

I am writing a dissertation about online communities and oF is my central case study. Seeing as you are all such wonderful people and so very helpful I was wondering if anyone would mind answering a couple of questions?

it’s awesome: lots of talented people, lots to learn everyday
Have you made any contributions to the oF core?
no; i made some minor custom changes, but it was only private mods for custom projects. Anyway the day I’ll have something that might be good for the oF core I’ll be happy to share
What is your experience of being a part of this community?
On the one hand, awesome! Many people write code for oF, a great numer of addons are available (although you have to search all over the net for them). A handful of people answer questions on a regular basis.
On the other hand, decidedly meh, the forum feels dead and lifeless, I feel that many questions/threads/pleas for help go unanswered. this could be different, statistically speaking, but that’s the feeling I get.
Maybe I’m just spoilt by other forums like the vvvv one, there’s a real vibrant community there, always people there to help you out, awesome community spirit…

No, I’m too noobish, still learning the ropes in oF.
Have you contributed by writing any addons?
No, see above. I’m just hosting a GUI plugin by someone else which would have otherwise probably disappeared.
1.) I know a large number of artists and artistically minded people (illustrators, painters, sculptors, etc.) but none of them code. All of my friends make art, *none* of them code. While there are differences between mediums, some vast, I don’t think there is one as vast as code from the rest. When I show off my work, people look at me like I’m an alien or a wizard.
But on here, it’s like I’m at Hogwarts. Lumos doesn’t impress anyone. I feel intimidated by the alien wizardy here, it’s nice.
2.) Nope, any modifications I make to the main lib are just me personalizing some openframeworks to my tastes or the needs of a specific program. It is very rare.
3.) No addons, an addon provides specific functionality (api, etc.) in my mind. I have released some code, more to come for sure. I feel compelled to give back.
What is your experience of being a part of this community?
People to have beers with, couches to sleep on, people to talk to, things that inspire me and make me want to get out of bed in the morning and be a better person.
Have you made any contributions to the oF core?
A few bug fixes and small things, which is pitifully small given what the community has given me.
Have you contributed by writing any addons?
A few but none of them are very good. Well, ofxSVG is ok, but it could be better.
What is your experience of being a part of this community?
In my experience there is an awful lot of knowledge in this community. It’s not uncommon for me to bang my head on some problem for a complete day, and after posting the issue on the forum I get all kinds of great suggestions. It might take a couple of days for some more people to chime in though, but I know everybody’s working on it’s own projects
Have you made any contributions to the oF core?
I only modify the core if it’s very specific for a project and it never leaves my computer.
Have you contributed by writing any addons?
Not officially, but I have shared some code (specifically on L-systems). It’s very rewarding to see your work being used by others who expand on it. I definitely plan on sharing more.
