2014 update:
I can get both of my 1473 Kinects to work on OS X without freezing by applying this patch.
Curious if that helps people.

Yes this worked for me, my 1473 model was not working at all and now I modified libfreenect and am running kinectExample with no crashes yet. Thanks!
