OF as Game Development Platform

Hi everyone,

I’m a beginner at Openframeworks, and so far it’s been really great.
I’m a game developer and I’m really amazed with the amount of addons that can be used with openframeworks.

I would like to ask you guys about what would be a nice combinations of addons and technique to develop games with openframeworks. My goal is to develop 2D PC games at first.

What would you recommend? Is there anyone out there doing the same thing?

It kind of depends on what you are trying to do. OF can be great to create games. And quite a few games were made with it. But it might also be too low tech. OF does not come with predefined sprites, keyframes, scripting or whatever.

I’d give of a try but also check out other game engines as well so you can chose depending on your idea.

Definitely OF is not itself a game engine, but at the same time is a nice glue of very nice libraries that can be use to make games. For example for a 2D game you can use 2D physics engine like box2d addon made by Todd Vanderlin

I mostly want to use it to work with 2D games. The game Ridiculous Fishing, by Vlambeer had a tremendous success, including Apple Design Award and was made with OF.


IMO for a 2D game you’re probably better off using something like cocos2d, unless you’re very familiar with OF and are using it because of the addon ecosystem. cocos2d is going to provide a lot of stuff that you want in a simple unified framework, sprites, easy sound engine, game-orienged event-system, etc.

Is there some any news in game development using openFrameworks? I need to use oF in my project because I’m doing some tracking with the Kinect and I am looking for a lib or list of libs. Thanks!
