Loading images outside of setup

I would like to load a number of images, and I respect the fact that a lot of this pre-prep-setup stuff happens in setup, but I have noticed that when there are a number of steps, it can cause a delay. Since there may be other people using this program on slower machines, I would like to have some form of letting them know that something is going on.

Kind of like a step-by-step indication of what is happening prior to allowing interaction to take place.

What is the easiest way to do this? I’ve been using a flag (bLoaded) and checking to see if it is true at the beginning of the main loop and, if not, loading everything with a message and setting it to true when complete, but that seems kind of old-school.

Can you display a message on screen during setup? That seems like the more logical choice.
