iOS and Metal rendering

I’ve got to a point where I need to render big meshes on iOS.
due to gl es limitations (64K vertices per mesh) and performance issues (high energy impact).
I thought on moving to Metal.
right now ofxiOS and OF have tight couple with gles although for basic rendering the principles are the same for Metal.

does anyone have any insights ?
How can I decouple gles ?
